I took this photo on one Sunday afternoon while taking one of my nephews to the city Zoo. We were resting for a while, when I saw the little girl sitting and eating ice cream. The way she was eating looked like the ice cream was the best thing that has ever happen to her. She didn’t pay attention to what other people were telling her about sitting on the ground or getting her dress dirty from melted ice cream. She was sitting in the corner as she wanted to hide herself and her delicious ice-cream; making sure nobody would take it away from her. She licked, and licked it, closing her sweet eyes for just a second, then she will open them and check, that the ice cream was still there, afraid that it would disappear. She was holding that small happiness with her tinny hands, as she was trying to eat it very slowly.
This image brought back memories of my childhood, when the world was different from now. During those times in my country we really couldn't have candies, ice creams or any other good things which children like, as often as we wanted them; as we can do now days. A simple Coca cola drink was only a story. The lack of money, and limitations made impossible to obtain those expensive goods easily. One reason was they were imported in limited quantities to special stores where you could buy them only with US Dollars, and in those days not many people have access to them. So instead of just going and buying them in many varieties like you can do now, sometimes being "picky", we used to spend a lot of time staring at the store window telling each other what we would buy if we had enough money. I remembered collecting colored covers from bubble gums or chocolates just to keep the memories of how good they were; not being sure if we will have the chance to get them again.
This photo is a flashback of those years, yet at the same time gives me a sense of happiness knowing that the children of today have a better chance in Life and the opportunity to try so many different things and have what we couldn’t have so easily. I took the picture in black and white, and added a little grain using a graphic editing program to make it look like the photos I have in my album taken by my parents during those years.
I decided to cut a little of her back just to bring her face and the ice cream little to the centre. The other thing is that if I didn't crop the photo, a piece of another person's leg would be included and
wouldn't look good, and of course I would have lost that feeling if thrying to set the people around the little girl would realize that I was taking pictures. I also wanted to eliminate unnecessary background with other people sitting or walking so
that's why I cropped my photo this way and used small DOF to get blurred background behind the girl.
