A troop of Malayaisn scouts out for a Saturday morning hike up Penang Hill.
Hiking Penang Hill, (or in Malay, Bukit Bendera (Flag Hill) located north-east of the center of Penang Island, Malaysia) can make you regret every donut or slice of pizza you’ve ever eaten. Although at only 5 kilometers (3miles) it’s not far in “distance” for a one day hike. But an altitude of approximate 2700 feet, with grades at times reaching 70-80%, warm temperatures and humidity in the nineties; the three miles might just as well be a marathon.
The work however does not come without reward. At the top temperatures are much cooler and the air doesn’t feel as heavy as it does at sea level. The views……Wonderful; oh and what a perfect place for a food court! The hike can make you very hungry. My choice was a plate of chicken fried rice and an “Ice cold beer”. I also bought a souvenir T-shirt (the one I was wearing was completely soaked with sweat from the hike).
Hot and tiring yes, but I will say “Hiking Penang Hill is the best one day hike I’ve ever taken.
